Robert E. Hart

Founder, President and CEO

Robert E. Hart serves as President and CEO of TruAmerica Multifamily and also chairs TruAmerica’s Investment Committee. When he founded TruAmerica in 2013, he did more than launch a company—he anticipated a market shift. His insight into the growing demand for quality workforce housing has been proven time and again over the past twelve years.

As affordability challenges and rising mortgage rates reshaped the housing landscape, Mr. Hart built a forward-looking investment strategy centered on acquiring and revitalizing existing apartment communities. That visionary approach powered TruAmerica’s rise into the top tier of multifamily real estate owners and investors in the U.S.

Mr. Hart’s leadership is marked by bold, calculated moves. He expanded TruAmerica’s footprint from a regional focus to a national leader of workforce housing. Today, TruAmerica invests across the risk spectrum and capital stack. Mr. Hart’s vision has expanded the investment platform to include new verticals including affordable LIHTC housing, structured finance and Build-for-Rent, accelerating the firm ahead of the curve. TruAmerica consistently ranks as one of the National Multifamily Housing Council’s largest apartment owners—and is the highest-ranked firm based in Los Angeles. With nearly $16 billion in assets under management, a track record of over 100 realizations, and a national portfolio exceeding 60,000 units, TruAmerica continues to lead in delivering attainable housing across the country.

Known for his approachable, people-first leadership style, Mr. Hart blends strategic insight with the kind of charisma that produces collaboration. Whether guiding investors, motivating his team, or executing complex transactions, he deftly brings stakeholders together under a unified vision.

With a career spanning nearly four decades, Mr. Hart is a recognized voice in the multifamily industry. He serves on the board of NMHC, and is involved in such influential organizations as ULI, PREA, and AFIRE. Mr. Hart is a member of the academic advisory boards of the UCLA Anderson School and the UCLA Ziman Center for Real Estate, and is one of only three members on the advisory board of the NYU Stern School of Business’ Chen Institute for Global Real Estate. He has been named to the LA500 by the Los Angeles Business Journal six times and has received accolades from the Los Angeles Times and Real Estate Forum, which named him among the industry’s “Best of the Best Bosses.” In 2023, Mr. Hart launched the award-winning podcast, Building Better Communities with Bob Hart, which focuses on how leaders can positively impact their communities.

Prior to founding TruAmerica, Mr. Hart earned industry accolades as the chief executive of Kennedy Wilson’s multifamily platform, which he envisioned and launched in 2000. During Mr. Hart’s 13½-year tenure, Kennedy Wilson acquired more than 20,000 apartment units with a total transaction value exceeding $4.5 billion.

Previously, Mr. Hart was senior vice president of portfolio management for Heitman Capital Management where he engineered the turnaround and disposition of a $500 million property portfolio. Previously, he served as Director of Real Estate Marketing for Executive Life Insurance Company, where he was responsible for the orderly liquidation of more than $1 billion in real estate assets and securities.

Mr. Hart’s impact extends beyond real estate. He has raised tens of millions of dollars for nonprofits and academic institutions and remains deeply committed to giving back. In early 2025, Mr. Hart co-founded the Los Angeles Wildfires CRE Pledge for Action, a coalition of more than 30 real estate leaders mobilizing to support affected communities in Southern California. Mr. Hart has personally led efforts to house displaced residents at TruAmerica properties and shape long-term recovery strategies.

For more than 20 years, he has served on the board of Chrysalis, seven of which as Board Chair, a nonprofit helping low-income and homeless individuals find employment. In 2023, he was honored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles Real Estate & Construction Network for his long-term dedication to philanthropy—an event that raised over $3.3 million. Other honors include the 2017 Spirit of Life Award from City of Hope, an event that raised $2.8 million, the 2022 Outstanding Philanthropist Award from the Association of Fundraising Professionals (Los Angeles chapter), and the Humanitarian Leadership Award from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, his alma mater. He is a member of the Jewish Federation’s RPO Group and also sits on the Board of Trustees of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Marlborough School and the Board of Governors at City of Hope.

Mr. Hart holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts and earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California Los Angeles.

Outside of work, Mr. Hart enjoys sailing, vintage sports cars, and traveling with his wife and daughter.
